In case you missed it, my most popular video of all time was about Charles Reid's advice to base the foundation of your painting design on strong local color, rather than strong contrast. The free video is available here - https://youtu.be/yBME7UTOPpk
For my newest tutorial, I decided to try out his advice and create a painting where I focus more on local color than contrast. Here is the finished piece:
I also just made a free video about how I painted the pony's eye that can be found at https://youtu.be/jxfEu4zuJrY
What is local color? Local color is the actual color of a thing - a lemon is yellow, so its local color is yellow. But when light hits the lemon, part of it will appear lighter than yellow, and the part in shadow will take on a grey orange cast. If the lemon is sitting next to something with a strong color, say a red pepper, that red pepper may reflect on part of the lemon and turn it a bright orange color.
For this wild pony painting, I played up the local color of the muzzle and eye and played down the rest of the colors. What do you think, did Charles Reid's tip make for a stronger painting?
